View of the City of Porto
This perspective of Porto during the siege of 1832-31 is one of the scarce representations of the city during this period. The military component is visible in the inscription and in the uniformed figures who populate the vast panorama. Carlos Van Zeller, author of the drawing, sent to R. Havell in London for printing, signed the engraving as Captain of the British Brigade in the service of D. Maria II.
The engraving is accompanied by an appendix, entitled “Key to the Print of Oporto”, constituted by a simplified sketch of the print, captioned in English and identifying 85 numbered places, buildings of the city and artillery batteries.
